In 1999 it was discovered that the tenor at St. Marys, Guildford (one the oldest peals of bells in the area) was cracked across the crown. The business of extracting the bell from the tower was undertaken by the local ringers. This involved a rather tricky journey from beneath the tower all the way down the aisle and through the main doors. Thanks goodness they managed it before the Sunday service...
The bell was welded at SoundWeld in Cambridgeshire, and returned to its original position sounding much better.
The tenor comes down...
Richard Waters and Rod Pierce look on after the tenor has been lowered from the tower, resting on a purpose-built platform to facilitate transport.
Tenor leaves reluctantly
Tenor goes back up!
